Thought/story: "Create a Christmas Traditions Album” This example is based on the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Scripture: Matt. 5:2-16
Event: Sermon on the Mount
Jesus Christ gave counsel
Recipe: Fudge
Ingredients: 2 eggs, 3 cups powdered sugar, 1 tsp. Vanilla, 3/4 cup butter, 1 1/2 c. milk choc. Chips, 1/2 c. walnuts
Instructions: Beat eggs until fluffy. Add vanilla and powdered sugar one cup at a
time. Mix well. Melt choc. Chips and butter. Add this to the egg mixture. Add
walnuts. Refrigerate to set.
Tradition: This is the first day of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" if you want to do
something every day from now until Christmas. You might want to try several
different things to celebrate this. One idea is to buy inexpensive holiday pillowcases for your family members and let them sleep on them for the Twelve Days of
Christmas ( you can find some at www.lovemom.com ) Or here is another idea from another parent:
"Remembering that when we were children, my brother and I used to ask my mother to
let us open just one of our Christmas gifts early, I tried something different with my son. To take the edge of waiting to open Christmas gifts, I purchased twelve
inexpensive gifts, wrapped them, and put them in his Christmas stocking. We called it
the Twelve Days of Christmas, and he was allowed to pick out and open one each of
the twelve days before Christmas. It did not matter to him what the gifts actually were (sometimes it was nuts or candy or gum). The excitement of being able to open
something each day accomplished more than I hoped. He learned to court the days left
by the unopened gifts. He learned patience and that grown ..ups understood how he felt, and never did he beg me to open the big ones. He is a young man now and still won't let me quit the practice." (Diane, Chesterton, IN)
Small gift idea: Ornament gift box. Come up with some sort of container that has slots or you could just use a big basket, too. Put several different ornaments in it for a gift that goes on the tree!
Or you can use the 12 days of Christmas idea:
Those of you who are into scrapbooking should have fun with this one. And those of you who haven’t done scrapbooking, this would be a fun time to start. The past 12 days on the countdown to Christmas would be fun to record those days with pictures, how the children reacted, and how much fun it was! To me scrapbooking is really a journal but with pictures and I would like to go as far as adding stories, music, and poems to make it the ultimate scrapbook!
The first time I was introduced to scrapbooking, was when our next door neighbor one day brought over a scrapbook with pictures that she had cut out of magazines. They were pictures of beautiful wildlife to beautiful land scaping . She said she made it for the children so they would have something to do on our long 9 hour trip we were going on. It really was a big help.
So the Twelve days of Christmas starts today, I am just going to give you some ideas to get you started:
OUR TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS:
Day One …............ Decorating the Tree, could say something like this: “On the first day of Christmas; the.....family decorates the Christmas tree.
Day Two .................Stringing the lights: On the second day of Christmas; Our daddy strings the lights. Twinkling so bright. Decking out with Christmas delight.
Day Three ................Signing the Cards: On the Third day of Christmas we make and sign the cards. Sending words of cheer, to family far and near. And we wish everyone a great year.
Day Four .................Visiting the Neighbors; On the fourth day of Christmas the......family visits all our friends, sharing the cheer. Takes them tasty food, and singing carols to families so dear.
Day Five ..................Baking Christmas Treats; On the Fifth day of Christmas we bake our Christmas treats. Gingerbread House. Candy wrapped up neat. We make hordes, with calories complete. When we’re done, we don’t cook for a week!
Day Six…………… Seeing the Lights; On the sixth day of Christmas, we can feast our eyes on the lights. Twinkling Christmas cheer, Glimmer in the air. Go to Christmas street windows at the Mall, On the Temple grounds. Beauty shines like a star. We can share.
Day Seven .............. Visiting Santa Claus; On the seventh day of Christmas. We go visit Claus. Tell him of our wishes. Seeking presents. Buy some. Fighting all the traffic. Long line waiting’s so fun. Spend lots of cash. Walk until I’m toast. Oh, my feet! Back is all a twist. Then the children rewrite their Christmas list!
Day Eight………… Giving Presents; On the eighth day of Christmas; We wrap the presents neat. Tie them with a ribbon. Homemade gifts are plenty, Try to keep a secret. Little baby sister, blurts out her gift to daddy! Hide a gift…. can’t find it! Brother always peeks. Mom pretends to be so surprised. Gifts of love always bind our family.
Day Nine. ………… Attending Christmas Socials; On the ninth day of Christmas the......family; go to all the parties, Fancy Christmas clothing. Glamour, glitz, and glitter. Eating and games all evening. Parties are such fun. Go to school plays. Football and Nutcracker, visit everyone. With the new year. We’re tired and numb.
Day Ten……………Giving to Charity; On the tenth day of Christmas the ……..family; Buy gifts for the homeless, Sub for Santa. Make quilts for the children. Visit nursing homes. Salvation Army. Toys for Tots. Quarters for Christmas, Give a gift for free, to the giving tree. It’s the spirit of Christmas cheer.
Day Eleven.....Free-for-All; On the eleventh day of Christmas; We finish up the list. Run to the store, Searching for that present. Wash all the cloths. Wrapping the last minute. Finnish up the dinner. Grandparents come a calling. What? they are sleeping by the tree?! Tasting mincemeat and eggnog. Husbands going shopping. Sew that button on. Midnight comes and goes. And the joy of the night lingers on.
Day Twelve ............. The Real Reason for Christmas; On the twelfth day of Christmas , we think of why it’s here. Ponder on the baby. Wrapped in swaddling cloths. Tell the Christmas story. Shephards came to see him. Angels sang his glory. Animals were lowing. Stars in heaven shining, Presents they were bringing, Kings sought the KING, Mary kneeling near. manger bed. Joseph watching o’re. Tis the day that our SAVIOR was born.
This year, enjoy the holidays. Start establishing traditions that will be remembered and bring your family closer. You’ll never guess what smell reminds me of Christmas! Well it is the original Jergens lotion! Us three, then four girls got a small bottle in our socks every year.
Also, Every year my father would guess his presents from us and mom! I will never forget the year my mother was determined that he wasn’t going to be able to guess her gift to him this time. Usually he would squeeze the gifts and shake them but mom wouldn’t allow him to squeeze his gift from her this year, in fact she did not put it under the tree this time. He was forever trying to manipulate hints from her like he always did. When she would give him little hints he would go at it until he guessed it and mom could never keep a straight face, and then he knew. That one year she just said; Bob, I’m only giving you one hint, it will fit in your sock. (We would all get one of dads hunting socks to use to hang up, his were always the biggest!) So he would guess and guess, but mom always answered true. I’ve never seen my dad so irritated when come Christmas day he still hadn’t guessed! That day we heard him exclaim! Well no wonder I couldn’t guess it Jenn! You clever wife! You made the biggest and most wonderous Christmas sock just to be able to fit a big Chain Saw! Well mom was sorry after that, because every year twas hard to fill dads special new big Christmas sock!
Spreading the joy of families throughout the world. Hoping to give you and your family helpful tips and ideas to simplify your life!
